Famous Fictional Lawyers – Legal Representation That’s Too Good (or Bad) To Be True
Vilified or loved, lawyers have played a central role in the plots of many famous and well-loved books. Here are just a few.
Atticus Finch. The Pulitzer-prize winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was the controversial story of a black man accused of raping a white girl in Alabama. Central to the story’s plot line was lawyer Atticus Finch. Finch was known as a respected, hardworking attorney who defended the accused. Finch was not only the moral hero of the book, but he exemplified the ideal of what an attorney was perceived to be, which was honest, high-minded, open-minded, and generous.
Perry Mason. While best known as the main character on the television show by the same name, Perry Mason started out as a work of fiction created by Erle Stanley Gardner. A defense attorney, Mason was known for his ability to prove his client’s innocence by showing the guilt of another. Mason personified the image of an attorney who fought veraciously on his client’s behalf, often taking on cases that appeared difficult and sometimes hopeless. Recently appointed Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor listed Perry Mason as one of her inspirations.
Sydney Carton. In the Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, Carton is a shrewd but lazy and alcoholic young English lawyer who regrets his wasted life. He volunteers to take the place of a man condemned to death. By taking the man’s place, Carton hopes to give meaning to his life and redeem himself in the eyes of the only woman he ever loved, who is engaged to the condemned man. As he climbs the gallows to his death, Carton is forever immortalized in the closing lines of the novel which read, “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.”
Rudy Baylor. John Grisham’s Rainmaker is a modern day David versus Goliath. Rudy Baylor is a somewhat disillusioned young law graduate, who has never tried a case in court. Despite his weaknesses and inexperience, readers quickly root for this underdog, who takes on a large insurance company, represented by a high-price prestigious law firm, and wins. Jad
